Religion has a great history of using shame and taboo to enforce behaviour. The Southern Gospel Congregation of St Luke used it on the young women of their flock to create compliant, well-behaved, entertaining toys.
It started with the sermons. No mention of an evil or poorly-behaved woman in the Bible went by without a reference to her “sinful udders”, her “whore’s melons”, her “devil-swollen teats”. But by contrast, women who were unattractive, or spurned by their husbands, were “flat-chested”, “unfeminine” or “man-like”.
The girls began to internalise a dichotomy – small tits were unattractive and undesirable, big tits were sinful and deserved punishment.
