Employer discrimination against pregnant women was a very serious crime, and judges had a wide range of powers available on sentencing. Amy, the head of a very prestigious law firm, had dismissed her secretary when her secretary revealed she was trying to conceive. The secretary had brought charges. Amy had fought them, waiving any mercy that might have come from an early plea of guilty.

She abandoned any dignity at that point, and tried to run. She knew what the sentence meant. The court officers tackled her near the door and brought her to the ground.
